Time to donate flags for Avenue of Flags

Albert E. Hoschler Post 186 of the American Legion is preparing for its annual Memorial Day services and Avenue of Flags in Akron May 27.

All Class Reunion Correction

Saturday evening, June 28, 2025, there will be a dinner catered by Central Catering at two times, tentatively set for 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. There will be entertainment in the auditorium at those same times. Times are subject to change depending on the number in attendance. We will be searching for school groups who would like to aid in the distribution of food and cleanup.

Absentee ballot information 

Absentee ballots for the June 4, 2024 Democratic, Republican and Libertarian Primary Elections are available beginning Wednesday, May 15 in the Auditor’s Office at Plymouth County Courthouse during regular business hours of 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.  Absentee ballots may be cast in person at the Auditor’s office until Monday, June 3 until 5 p.m. 

Akron Farmers Market begins June 19

The Akron Farmers Market is set to begin June 19 and every Wednesday through Oct. 23 weather permitting. The Farmers Market is held in the Akron City Park, 5-7 p.m. Food stand and entertainment at every market.

Live and Let Slide trombone ensemble will be performing at the Akron Opera House Sunday, May 19 at 5:30 p.m. No tickets needed, just come. Cost is a freewill offering.

Also chosen for KCAU’s Best of Class

Audrey Miller, a student at Akron-Westfield, was recognized by Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Governor Adam Gregg for outstanding academic achievement at the 22nd Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony on April 28 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.

Work progresses on concession stand

In spite of all the recent rain causing a lot of mud, work continues on the concession stand at the football field. Along with concessions, the stand will have a storage facility and restrooms that will be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. ​​​​​​​Friendship and Service Club Supports Local Projects

Members of the GFWC/IA Friendship and Service Club recently donated to several local projects. 

“Each year we raise funds through the Great Akron Scarecrow Festival and in turn put those funds to work for the community by supporting projects that need financial assistance,” stated club president Lisa Harris. 

A-W students headed to National History Day

Ninety-eight Iowa students from 21 different schools earned top honors in the National History Day in Iowa Contest April 29 and advanced to compete in the national contest in June. Twelve of those in four projects are from Akron-Westfield. 

Prom breakfast winners

For the After Prom breakfast at the Akron Golf Clubhouse put on by Patti Ericson, Peoples Bank donated $300 cash and Ag Optimus donated a TV as door prizes. Winners were (l-r) Reegan McKee ($100), Arik Allard ($100), Hayden Wahlberg (TV), Bella Robinson ($100)

May is school board recognition month

Each May the Iowa Association of School Boards invites Iowans to honor and recognize school board members. This month is a designated time to show support for your local school board. The 2024 theme is “Propelling Students to New Heights.”

All Class Reunion update

The planning committee met Wednesday, April 4, in the Security National Bank meeting room with 12 in attendance: Carol Brown, Roxanne Larson, Deb McPherson, Bob Brown, Mary Lou James, Sharon Frerichs, Andrea Weber, Mary Swain, Carla Winquist, Karen Carlson, Rhonda Johnson, and Janel Pearson. More members are encouraged to join in future planning sessions.

Trees given to A-W fourth graders

The GFWC/IA Friendship and Service Club presented Colorado blue spruce trees to each of the Akron-Westfield fourth grade students April 17.
