Looking for flags for Avenue of Flags

Each year at the annual Memorial Day program in Akron, Albert E. Hoschler Post 186 of the American Legion dedicates flags of deceased veterans into the Albert E. Hoschler Post 186 Avenue of Flags.

SNB donates to A-W Foundation

Security National Bank recently donated $2,500 to the Akron-Westfield Educational Excellence Foundation for use towards the foundation's scholarships for A-W seniors. Canine Health Month Advice

April is known nationally as Canine Health as organizations such as FitPaws, Pet Wellbeing, the Humane Society, and PETA aim to illuminate the importance of keeping pets healthy and fit. 

A-W fifth graders complete D.A.R.E.

The Akron-Westfield fifth graders completed and graduated from the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program April 12. The program is run by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds declared April 12 Iowa D.A.R.E. Day so this was the day chosen for graduation. 

Morningside students recognized for achievements

The annual Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Honors Convocation was held at Morningside University during which several students and employees were recognized for their academic, co-curricular, athletic, and professional achievements.

Wicked weather hits area

Early in the week there was some pretty wicked weather in the area. 

2025 ALL-CLASS REUNION PLANNING IS UNDERWAY

The third planning meeting for the Akron/Akron-Westfield  All-Class Reunion will be held at the Security National Bank’s  meeting room at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. Many items were put on the schedule for the June 27, 28, 2025 reunion but more ideas and volunteers are still needed. If you are interested in assisting in any way, you are most welcome to join in these planning sessions. 

 

​​​​​​​Skip’s Place: a special room at the care center

Approximately two years ago at the Akron Care Center, a project was started to create a Sensory Room. A Sensory Room is an area dedicated with many objects used to relax or stimulate individuals such as: bright lights, a lifelike dog, three cats, a baby, kinetic sand, tools, aquarium, and much more. After receiving donations and fundraising for the room, care center employees gathered ideas and purchased items.

Tree down

Strong winds April 6 took down a tree in the west side of Riverside Cemetery. Gusts were as high as 35 miles per hour in the area. Along with the wind, there was s little bit of spotty hail but not much rain. Photo by Dodie Hook

Congratulations to AkronWestfield Jazz One for placing 4th at the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships in a tough 2A class at Waukee, Iowa. 

Thrift store raises over $18,000 for children’s center

Helping Hands Thrift Shop in Akron raised $18,294.16 last year for the Akron Children’s Center to be used where needed. The thrift store operates on one-hundred percent volunteers and donations for the store.
