Great Akron Scarecrow Festival & Contest is Saturday

Heerens bring menagerie of animals

It’s one of Eldon and Marcene Heeren’s favorite times — providing animals for children’s petting zoos.

This Saturday, the Akron, S.D., couple are bringing a menagerie to the Great Akron Scarecrow Festival & Contest, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Akron City Park.

Their pets have been one of the main attractions at the festival since 2002.

In fact, Zoe, an orphaned miniature donkey that they bottle fed, is the hit at the Donkey Biscuit Lottery — it’ll be her manure “biscuit” that will decide the winner of the Donkey

    There are two categories: 1) Businesses and 2) Non-Profit Organizations/Individuals. Prizes are $25 Chamber Bucks to the winner of each category.
