West Sioux sends nine to state track

Nine members of the West Sioux track team traveled to Des Moines to participate in the state co-ed track meet May 18-20. West Sioux Class 1A state track qualifiers: Emma Avery, Hunter Dekkers, Zach Hulshof, Kade Lynott, Jake Lynott, Zach McKee, Tasha Peterson, Hailey Pullman, Brooklyn Steever.

The top eight finishers in each event received medals.

Highest finishers for West Sioux were Jake Lynott who placed second in the Long Jump with a jump of 20’9.5 for the boys and Hailey Pullman who placed third in the 1,500 Meter Run with a time of 4:57.03 for the girls. Hailey also medaled in the 800 Meter Run by placing seventh with a time of 2:24.50.

    WS tracksters headed for state

    Akron-Westfield Youth Wrestling Club is sponsoring summer camps. Camp technicians are Ryan Morningstar, Joe Slaton, Paul Glenn and Vince Turk.

    Monday June 12 – 9:00 – 11:30 a.m.

    Grades 7-12

    Tuesday, June 13 and Wednesday, June 14 – 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Lunch is provided.

    West Sioux hosts Coed Relays

    The West Sioux track teams hosted coed relays May 4. Both West Sioux girls’ and boys’ teams finished in fifth at the meet.

    Attorney General Ballot Explanations Released for Two Initiated Measures on Legalizing Marijuana

    PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced today that Attorney General Explanations for two proposed initiated measures have been filed with the Secretary of State. These statements will appear on petitions that will be circulated by the sponsor of the measures. For each petition, if the sponsor obtains a sufficient number of signatures (13,871) by November 2017, as certified by the Secretary of State, the measure will be placed on the ballot for the November 2018 general election.

    Learning to golf at West Sioux

    On April 3, West Sioux golfers will have their first meet at home when they take on Harris-Lake Park golfers.

    WS begins track with three indoor meets

    West Sioux’s track team has already had their first three meets for the season.

    They will have their first outdoor meat April 4 at Elk Point-Jefferson, S.D.

    The Lady Falcons’ Head Coach is Dennis Weerheim and the Falcons Head Coach is Jerome Hoegh.

    Assistant coaches are Clint McKee and Jesse Strong.

    Small’s team places second

    The Turnaround GK Blaze and GK Storm competitive gymnastics team blazed into their last regular meet of the 2017 competition season at the Golden Invitational in Omaha March 10-11. The Turnaround GK Team took 37 gymnasts who competed at four different levels, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum

    INA All-State selections

    for girls’ basketball

    The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2017 All-State Girls Basketball teams for Class 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A March 7 naming Pocahontas Area’s Elle Ruffridge as Miss Basketball. The four-time all-stater led her squad to state finals three times in her career, including state titles in 2016 and 2017. She finished her career as the all-time leader in Iowa in points scored with 2,951, three-point field goals made with 466 and assists with 802 for the Indians. Ruffridge will continue her basketball
