WS: Two state wrestling champions

(L-r:) West Sioux has two state wrestling champions: senior Kory Van Oort, 152; and junior Adam Allard, 120. This was Van Oort’s first state championship after placing second as a sophomore and fifth as a junior. This is Allard’s third straight championship with hopes to become a four-time winner. Also competing at state: Logan Koedam, 195, third place; Cullen Koedam, 113, sixth; Dillon Lynott, 132, eighth; and participating: Drayven Kraft, 106; Carson Lynott, 138; and Trevor Schuller, 182. The team placed fifth overall. At state duals, West Sioux finished in third place.

    West Sioux is State Champ again!

    The West Sioux Falcons are state football champions for the second year in a row. In 2017 they were in Class A and this year moved up to Class 1A. WS defeated Dike New Hartford, 52-38, in the championship game Nov. 16 at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls. Chase Koopmans was named the Orange City Area Health System’s Player of the Game. Above, members of the team hold the championship trophy.

    Two West Sioux volleyball players were selected for All-Conference:

    Second Team: senior Stdney Reinking

    Honorable Mention: junior Payton Schwiesow

    West Sioux All District

    West Sioux is well represented on the 2018 Class 1A District 1 All-District football team:

    First Team: Chase Koopmans, linebacker; Hunter Dekkers, quarterback; Kade Lynott, wide receiver; Conner Koopmans, defensive line; Trevor Schuller, linebacker; Jared Nohava, offensive line; Victor Hernandez, defensive back.

    Second Team: Brian Duenas, offensive line; Logan Koedam, defensive end.

    Four Falcons named to All Northwest Iowa

    Four West Sioux basketball players were named to the All Northwest Iowa Team.

    For the girls, senior Abbie Ericson was named to the Third Team and junior Emma Mace was named to the Fifth Team.

    For the boys, sophomore Hunter Dekkers was named to the Fourth Team and senior Jake Lynott was named to the Fifth Team.

    Seven Falcons make All-Conference basketball

    Seven West Sioux basketball players were named to the War Eagle All-Conference Team.


    First Team: junior Emma Mace (unanimous selection), senior Abbie Ericson.

    Second Team: senior Katey Koopmans.

    Honorable Mention: senior Josie McKee

    WS girls fall in first round of the state tournament

    The West Sioux girls basketball culminated a great season at the state tournament. Unfortunately the No. 8 Falcons faced No. 1 Treynor in the first round Feb. 27 losing 54-30. Treynor was then beaten by Grundy Center, 42-39, in the semifinals. Cascade defeated Grundy Center in the finals, 41-37, to become Class 2A state champs.

    Treynor dominated on the interior and opened up the game against WS in the second quarter to lead 30-10 and led by as many as 27. WS was unable to mount

    West Sioux girls advance to state

    The No. 11 West Sioux girls basketball team defeated No. 14 IKM-Manning, 58-54, Feb. 19 in Mapleton to become Class 2A Regional 8 champs. They advanced to the state tournament Feb. 27 – March 3 at Wells Fargo in Des Moines for the first time since 2012.

    Leading scorer for WS was Abbie Ericson with 18 coming from seven field goals and four free throws. She also contributed five rebounds, one assist, and two blocks.

    West Sioux girls head to state!

    The West Sioux girls basketball team defeated IKM-Manning, 58-54, to become Class 2A Regional 8 champs and will advance to the state tournament Feb. 27-March 3 at Wells Fargo in Des Moines.

    No. 8 West Sioux (21-3) will face No. 1 Treynor (22-1) Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 6:45 p.m. in the quarterfinal at state.

    Adam Allard repeats as state champion

    West Sioux sophomore Adam Allard repeated as state wrestling champion last weekend at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines to remain undefeated.

    Last year, Allard wrestled at 106 moving up to 113 this year, is moving towards his goal of becoming a four time state champion.

    Allard faced Joel Sampson of AHSTW defeating him by fall (0:23) in the first round. Next up Allard defeated Jacob Moore of Denver
