Iowa DOT closes Akron Maintenance facility

Come Aug. 31, the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) Maintenance Shed doors at the corner of Iowa Highways 3 and 12 will be permanently closed.

It was announced last week that IDOT officials have decided to close the Akron facility along with the IDOT facilities in Centerville, Corning, Gowrie, Rock Valley, Sabula and Soldier.

This is the result of the Iowa Legislature funding only half of the IDOT’s requested budget, according to IDOT Director of Communications Andrea Henry.

There are still five other facilities within 30 miles of Akron: Alton, Le Mars, Sloan and two in Sioux City, she added.
