A-W Jazz I Choir places second at state championships

“It was their best performance of the year,” said Akron-Westfield Vocal Music Director Ryan Schuknecht. “They gave their best performance at the right time.”

The right time was at the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships on March 28 at Staplin Center in West Des Moines.

The jazz choir, aka Groove It Or Lose It, auditioned by video, then was one of eight Class 1A jazz choirs invited to the state championship.

“It went really well, said Schuknecht.

In addition, Akron-Westfield senior Nick Schnell was named the Class 1A male Outstanding Musician. He performed a solo in one of the jazz choir’s three pieces, “My Romance.”

The Class 1A singers were Riverside High School, Oakland, first place; Akron-Westfield, second place; Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto, third place; West Sioux, fourth place; Central Lyon, fifth place; Central City, sixth place; Nodaway Valley, Greenfield, seventh place; and South O’Brien, Paullina, eighth place.
