Some feel that Memorial Day weekend is the first weekend of summer.

And in Akron, it was — starting with Poppy Day and Chubs Country Store’s kickoff to the weekend, summer activities are now in full swing. Even thoug SUmmer does not officially start until June 21.

As the sun rose Saturday, May 28, local Legionnaires decorated veterans’ graves in Riverside and St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery.

On Monday morning, the Albert E. Hoschler American Legion Post No. 186 held their traditional Memorial Day celebration with a 10 a.m. program, followed by fellowship and luncheon served by the Auxiliary members.

On Tuesday, May 30, the Akron librarians hosted their kickoff of the Summer Reading Program, Build A Better World, with the Ahuna family from Kaneohe, Hawaii.

The Westerner Summer Ball Program games began in earnest as the month of June began.

The first full week of summer ended with a new Akron Chamber of Commerce event, Flea Market Fridays, which will be held every Friday throughout June.
