HRH offers Hologistic 3D Mammograms

A bull rider makes a full ride in just eight seconds.

And in just the same amount of time, a woman can know if she has cancer in one of her breasts.

On Oct. 25, the Hawarden Regional Healthcare begins offering Hologic 3D Mammography, which takes just seconds to create three-dimensional views for breast cancer screening.

According to HRH Radiology Manager/Mammographer Kayla Dykstra, each view taken with this Hologic 3D Memmography machine amounts to about four seconds of breast compression, and with mammograms, there are a minimum of two views taken for each breast…roughly eight seconds per breast.

The 3D mammography produces a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue that helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue.

The Hologic 3D mammography screening experience is similar to a traditional mammogram. During a 3D mammography exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.

"The ability to offer 3D Mammography in-house is extremely exciting for Hawarden Regional Healthcare. It provides women state-of-the-art technology close to home and in an environment that is more appealing than a mobile service. This enhancement would have not been possible without the support of the Hospital Auxiliary's donation of $30,000 dollars a year for the next six years,” said Jayson Pullman, CEO at Hawarden Regional Healthcare.

What are the known benefits?

• Reduced Callbacks: 3D Mammography allows the radiologist to look at different layers of the breast tissue, helping to distinguish normal breast tissue from abnormal breast tissue. Information from these additional views is believed to lead to fewer callbacks and therefore less anxiety for women.

Better Visualization: Radiologists can better determine the size, shape and location of an abnormality with 3D Mammography.

• Improved Sensitivity: By minimizing the impact of overlapping breast tissue, 3D Mammography may improve breast cancer screening and early detection.

3D mammography system is made by Hologic, a world leader in digital mammography. The Hologic 3D system offers exceptionally sharp breast images, an advanced ergonomic design providing more patient comfort, and the ground-breaking Hologic 3D Mammography platform designed to deliver superior screening and diagnostic performance for all breast types.

By offering women the latest and more accurate 3D technology in mammography, Hawarden Regional Healthcare expects to increase the number of area women who will be routinely screened.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.
