It’s official.

Akron councilors increased electric rates 6 percent at their Nov. 28 meeting.

However, customers, including Akron residents, won’t fill the pinch until April 2018 as the first meter reading for this increase will be March 25, 2018.

According to Akron City Administrator Dan Rolfes, the cause of the increase is the city’s Electric Substation Improvement Project.

“Our bonding company recommended doing this to give ourselves a better (financial) cushion on paying that off and moving forward from here on out,” said Rolfes during a public hearing on the increase.

“One of the things we’re looking to do is add a different transformer to that substation project,” he explained. “With that capability, when one transformer or the other goes down, we’ll still be able to provide power to everybody in town without having people try to conserve usage.”
