World Peace.

That is what one Akron-Westfield senior asked Santa Claus to bring her during the Akron Area Chamber of Commerce’s Nov. 29 Hometown Christmas celebration.

“World Peace is no fighting,” said 18-year-old Kiana Appley. “Everyone gets along.”

“Obviously, that’s pretty hard because there’s always going to be people who have their opinions and you really can’t change that,” she said. “But if we were to make it so people weren’t so offended by things, that they could just keep it to themselves, then it would be easier to come together than break apart.”

“I asked Santa for World Peace because there are a lot of issues going on right now,” said Kiana, explaining there’s more within the United States but there are also other issues such as the differences between North Korea and the United States.

On the home front, “the Republicans and Democrats are just fighting, especially right now,” she said, noting the net neutrality issue with internet service providers.

According to www.wikipedia.com, “Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers must treat all data on the Internet the same, and not discriminate or charge differently by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or method of communication. For instance, under these principles, internet service providers are unable to intentionally block, slow down or charge money for specific websites and online content.”

On Dec. 14, the Federal Communications Commission voted to repeal the net neutrality policy.

“That’s going to make a lot of controversy between people,” said Kiana, adding another issue is people not liking President Donald Trump. “He has his good views and his bad views like every president we’ve ever had.”

“I just think if we had World Peace, then a lot more things would be easier — it would be easier to move some things forward.”

Although she admitted she only gets news through social media apps like Twitter, Kiana told The Akron Hometowner, she’s really not interested in it at this time.

“I’d rather not think about it,” said Kiana. “That’s probably not a good thing of me because I can vote now.”

In addition to asking Santa for World Peace, Kiana would ask Santa for a “good college experience” as she is planning on attending the University of Iowa, majoring in Biology with a goal of becoming a dentist. “I’d ask for help to make it through college finals because I’m pretty scared of that. Other than that, I’m pretty excited to go (to college).”

Kiana, an Akron-Westfield Honor Roll member, participates in volleyball, track and softball with the Lady Westerners. She sings in Choir and the Jazz Choir, competes in Large Group and Individual Events Speech contests and enjoys art.

She enjoys hanging out with friends, socializing, shopping and art — especially painting.

When asked what gift she’d give to Santa, Kiana responded, “Probably whatever he wanted because if he created World Peace, he’d end all the world’s problems.”

“I’m excited for Christmas,” she said, “and for the New Year to start — to see where that goes because you never know — maybe things will change and get better in the world.”

“But, we’ll just have to see,” said Kiana.
