Akron Golf clubhouse opens under new management

By Julie Ann Madden

At the end of October 2017, A’s Enterprises owners Andres Arreola and Fabian Arana finished their two-year contract with the Akron Golf Club Inc.

The Akron Golf Course’s clubhouse was temporarily closed to the general public until new management was found.

On Jan. 4, the clubhouse bar officially reopened — 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursdays through Saturdays — under the management of Gustavo Moraza, a Des Moines native.

Moraza is starting with the clubhouse bar and plans to reopen the restaurant this spring. Angie Small of Akron, will operate the restaurant.

People can call Gustavo at 515-979-4584 to rent the clubhouse banquet room.

Moraza graduated from East High School in Des Moines in 2006. Since graduation, he has been working as a server and managing restaurants, bars, wedding receptions and banquets.

The past four years, Moraza has been employed at the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City. This is an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course with about 150 members.

He and Samantha Mohr, who is a waitress at Akron Jo’s Cafe and is opening her own business Body Elegance, moved to Akron in November 2017. They have one daughter, Hazel.

Moraza is a “late bloomer” to golfing. Even though he didn’t start golfing until age 20, he thoroughly enjoys the sport — he plays “eight days a week.”

He also enjoys music, especially playing guitar and it doesn’t matter if it’s metal or country music.

“I plan to incorporate family-friendly activities here,” said Moraza who is still in the beginning stages of planning those.
