An exciting year.

That is how 2017 Akron Area Chamber of Commerce President Rodney Anderson summed the Chamber’s year, at the annual banquet Jan. 20 at the Akron Golf Course.

“We have had a number of new businesses joining the Chamber,” said Anderson, “and a number of events we expanded upon — including adding a new event ‘Flea Market Fridays’ and Receipt Rebates.”

Anderson passed the Chamber’s Post Office Box mail key to incoming President Jennie Roed of Thorson Drug.

Agreeing 2017 had several new Chamber things, Roed told the crowd of more than 100 she wanted to keep the momentum going.

She noted the third annual Holiday Chamber Bucks sale sold $23,500 of the discounted Chamber Bucks.

“All of that stays in Akron and is circulated through the community,” said Roed, adding she wants to expand this program by increasing the amount sold. “What better way — shop in Akron and get their money back!”

Another highlight was the formation of a Promotions Committee, which brainstorms activities and events to promote Akron businesses. This resulted in the Flea Market Fridays and Receipt Rebates.

“We are totally on the right track and want to build on that,” said Roed, who circulated sheets for people to volunteer to serve on several new committees, including the Budget Committee, Flea Market Committee, Farmers Market Committee, Welcoming Committee, Holiday Committee, New Member Recruitment Committee, and Grant Committee, which would help bring new business to town, increasing entrepreneurship and economic development.

“Every member should sign up for a committee, said Roed.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by David Harris, a comedian and magician. He entertained at tables during the banquet and then put on a humorous show following the banquet which included picking on people in the audience!

The banquet dinner was catered by Akron Jo’s Cafe and featured Chicken Cordon Bleu and Stuffed Pork Chops.
