John Henrich came from behind to post an 8-7 decision over Brennan Swafford of Mediapolis in the 160 pound class 1A State Tournament Championship.

The final match was a real struggle as Swafford was very quick and strong. With the score tied at seven, and 14 seconds to go, Henrich escaped from the down position to take the lead and the championship was his.

Henrich, a high school Junior and also the state champion in 2017, closed out the year with a 44-0 record. Henrich now has an undefeated record of 87-0 in his last two years at Akron-Westfield.

Also competing in the State Tournament was Christian Wolthuizen at 182 pounds. Wolthuizen and Henrich were wrestling partners.

Wolthuizen won his first match in Des Moines but lost the next two. He finished the year with his record at 38 wins and 10 losses.

A Senior, Wolthuizen has signed on with the Air Force National Guard with hopes of becoming a pilot. He is the son of Jeff and Lisa Wolthuizen.

Henrich was a transfer from Rapid City. He wrestled three times in the South Dakota State meet where he finished third as a seventh grader at 120, didn’t place at 145 as an eight grader, and finished third at 152 as a Freshman. His overall record is 185-34 for five years of wrestling.

Henrich had one point scored against him in 43 matches until the finals of the State Tourney. Luckily, he came through without a scar on his face, unlike last year.

Henrich, the son of Brad and Michelle Henrich, has one more year at A-W and hopefully will bring home a third state title next year. His dad Brad is an A-W grad and his mom Michelle is a Clear Lake, SD, grad. John just wants to wrestle this summer and try to get better.

Congratulations to two laid back, quiet gentlemen. You have both made your community and school very proud of you.
