A fire in downtown Hawarden downtown didn’t destroy the Hawarden Regional Healthcare Auxiliary Thrift Store, according to Hawarden Fire Chief Duane Schiefen.

Hawarden firefighters responded to the 3 p.m., Sunday afternoon call, discovering the fire was isolated to the store’s drop-off area. Firefighters were able to get the fire put out before it burned into the actual building.

“There was no severe damage to the building,” said Schiefen, who thinks the fire was electrical in nature.

He anticipates the store will only be closed a few days — until after the State Fire Marshal completes his investigation.

Akron, Ireton and Alcester, S.D., firefighters also responded to assist the Hawarden Fire Department.
