Help Akron keep Heyl expansion

Akron city officials are requesting help from area citizens.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is updating the Flood Insurance Rating Maps (FIRM) and at the present time their maps will put the Akron Business/Industrial Park in a floodplain. This will cause all businesses — existing and future — to be required to buy extremely-expensive flood insurance.

In addition, it can adversely affect any new construction there. Current DNR floodplain construction requirements will stop Heyl Truck Lines Inc.’s expansion project, which is set to begin construction March 1. Heyl’s is Akron’s second largest employer, and it’s imperative that we keep this project here.

Akron city officials are asking people to contact Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and Lt. Governor Adam Gregg for help in getting DNR officials get the new FIRM details affecting this expansion project to Akron city officials by Feb. 27.

To reach the Reynolds and Gregg, call 515-281-5211, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and leave a message. People can also complete a Governor’s Office “Contact” form at
