Kristian Porter rushed for 77 yards on 15 carries and scored one touchdown as the University of Sioux Falls Cougars beat St. Cloud State University, 32-19, at St. Cloud, Minn., in the season football opener Aug. 30.
USF gained its first win over a ranked NCAA Division II opponent when it beat No. 16 ranked St. Cloud State Thursday and also won its first contest as a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
Porter is a senior for the Cougars and alum of West Sioux Class of 2008. Also a starter for the Cougars is senior Jared Vlotho, who plays right guard, and is also a West Sioux alumnus. Porter also caught two passes for four yards.
USF built a 29-13 lead by halftime. Porter scored on a four-yard run to cap an eight-play, 77-yard drive for a 15-6 USF lead with 41 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Cougars open their home schedule at 1 p.m., Sept. 8 with a game against Minnesota State University-Moorhead at Bob Young Field in Sioux Falls.
