Harold Arthur Vander Schoor was born on April 1, 1921, to Gerrit and Nellie (Zordrager) Vander Schoor in Hawarden. He graduated from Hawarden High School in 1939 and continued his education in 1941 going to welding school (NYA) in Milford, IA. He went on to weld in the shipyards of Bremerton, WA, during WWII. When he returned to Hawarden, he took a job as a hired hand where he met his future wife. On December 21, 1945, Harold united in marriage to Arta Louise Davis in Sioux City.

They farmed together for 25 years before moving into Hawarden in 1970 where Harold worked for Kane’s Beef Packinghouse until it closed and then welded at Alkota in Alcester, SD. Later he retired in 1986 after 15 years of bookkeeping for Scroggs Feed and Grain. That gave him more time to pursue his hobby, growing fruit trees of all kinds.

As a youth, he attended the Associated Church before joining the First Baptist Church of Hawarden, having been a member since 1948. Harold will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, who was a devoted Christian man that dearly loved his family and friends.

Grateful for having shared in Harold’s life: his wife of more than 66 years, Arta Vander Schoor of Hawarden; 3 daughters: Sharon (Norm) DeBoom of Sioux Center, IA, Linda (Bob) Bouwman of Akron, and Debra VanBruggen of Hawarden; 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren: Brent (Marsha) DeBoom, Paige, Addyson, Michelle (Mark) Mount, Meghan, Mason, Brian (Racquel) DeBoom, Alexandria, Angela (Brian) Fransen, Emma, Henrik, Eric Bouwman, Jason (Jessica) DeBoom, Reece, Ella and Katie VanBruggen; along with several in-laws, nieces and nephews.
