Roger and Angela Price of rural Akron, S.D., will be hosting a tour at their magnificent home, the former Baker Mansion, on Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. to raise funds for the replacement of the roof on the Akron Area Museum.

The Baker Mansion is located at 48113 South Dakota Highway 48, west of Akron, and is listed as a National Historic Place as of Aug. 7, 1979.

The company that insures the museum has said that if the roof is not replaced by January 2013, they are going to drop the museum’s insurance coverage. The Prices have been most generous in opening up their home in order to raise money to go towards the much needed funds to make the roof replacement possible.

A bid has been accepted by Jose’s Roofing from Sioux City for $8,710 and the museum board, the Akron Historical Society, is looking forward to starting the work soon.

With any construction project, there is always the possibility of unforeseen costs. Any and all help in funds that the museum receives will be much appreciated.

Tickets will go on sale as of Wednesday, Sept. 12, and will be available by one of the following options: Akron Veterinary Clinic and Peoples Bank, both located in Akron; or from one of the following board members; Rodney Anderson, 605-565-3168; Brenda Groon, 712-568-2400; Angela Price, 605-565-2717; Connie Tentinger, 605-565-3212; or by mailing your ticket payment to Akron Area Museum, P.O. Box 252, Akron, Iowa 51001-0252. (Be sure to list your name with your payment.)
Tours take about an hour and a half to go through this home and will be started at approximately 15 minute intervals. All of the proceeds from the tour — 100 percent — will go towards the Akron Historical Society’s museum roof replacement fund.

Since this is a private home, the Akron Historical Society’s board of directors requests that you honor the privacy of their home and limit your visit requests to the scheduled tour date and time frame.

Thank you to all of you in advance who attend and give to the Akron Historical Society’s roof fund raiser.

Respectfully yours, Akron Historical Society Board of Directors.
