The Lady Westerners won two of three matches at Spalding Catholic’s volleyball tournament and won the tournament’s second place trophy.
Akron-Westfield beat Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn by a 2-1 margin with a comeback win. A-W lost the first set, 21-10, won the next two sets, 21-12, 15-12 to claim their first win of the Sept. 22 tournament.
A-W then faced the home team Spalding Catholic. A-W beat the Spartans 21-18 in the first set, then 21-12 in the second set for a 4-3 record for sets on the day.
A-W lost to first place Boyden -Hull, 21-6, 21-12, in the first match Saturday morning.
A-W Coach Mollie Koopmans was pleased with her team’s effort.
“We were sluggish against Boyden-Hull but it was the first round after Homecoming the night before. After that we started to communicate better. Our serving was stronger,” said Koopmans.
A-W had a 7-7 record overall after the tournament.
A-W vs. Spalding Catholic
The two teams battled to a 13-13 tie in the first set. Kills by Bethany Eastman and Kayla Tindall put the Lady Westerners ahead by one, 14-13. A-W opened up a four-point lead, 18-14, with Dana Hedlund serving. The Spartans then rallied for a 19-18 deficit. Jordan Hansen and Haley Coyle then finished off the sets with kills for A-W.
A-W jumped to leads of 6-2 and 8-3 in the second set but again the Spartans rallied for an 8-8 tie. Kortney Hedlund’s serving gave A-W the lead at 10-9, and it increased to 13-9 on two points by Coyle, one for an ace. Sophomore Cali Westergard’s kill made it 14-10 and the Lady Westerners opened up a bigger lead at 18-10 on a kill by Eastman. Westergard’s serving brought the Lady Westerners to match point where they finished it off, 21-12.
