The Dordt College Defenders women’s cross country team advanced two spots in the second NAIA Women’s Cross Country Coaches Top 25 released Sept. 19. The Defenders moved from 15th to 13th after a strong finish at the Woody Grenno Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Sept. 15.
The Defenders garnered 351 points in the polling system done by 20 coaches across the country. Dordt was one point out of 12th and four points behind the 11th place team.
Dordt was the top finishing NAIA school at the Grenno Invitational and had its five runners within 43 seconds of each other over the 6,000-meters course.
The Defenders finished with 282 team points. The Dordt team was led by Marissa Harkema with a time of 23:23. Katie Bonnema, of Ireton, was 40th with a time of 23:28. Lauren Opp was 47th with a time of 23:34; Abby DeVries was 76th in 24:01 and Renee Buikema was 81st for a 24:06 to round out the Defenders’ times.
