A-W volleyball beats Spalding, 3-0

The Lady Westerners headed to Granville for another volleyball match with Spalding Catholic, the second time in a week, and came home again with a victory.

Akron-Westfield triumphed against Spalding Catholic, 3-0, Sept. 27 in a War Eagle Conference match. A-W’s record reached .500 both in league play at 3-3 and overall at 8-8 with the win.

A-W outlasted Spalding Catholic for a 28-26 win in Set One. The Lady Westerners won Set Two, 25-19 and Set Three, 25-14.

A-W had better than 90 percent serving for the victory and included 10 aced serves.

Sophomore Kortney Hedlund led the way with a 20-for-20 serving night with five aces. Junior Kayla Tindall was 18-for-19 serving with three aces and had four kills. Junior Dana Hedlund had 20 assists to spark the offense and was 11-for-11 serving.

A-W ended 68-for-74 serving for 0.919 percent.

Senior Emily Miller led the net play with six kills. Junior Bethany Eastman and Sarah Schroeder had five each.

Junior Jordan Hansen led the defensive court coverage with 22 digs. Haley Coyle, Kortney Hedlund, and Desi Oltmanns each had four.

A-W had seven solo blocks, led by Schroeder’s three with four total. Eastman also had a total of three blocks.

Spalding Catholic was 8-14 overall record, 3-4 WEC after the loss.

A-W is at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Oct. 4 then will host Elk Point-Jefferson, S.D., at 5:30 p.m., Oct. 6. A-W hosted West Sioux Oct. 2 in WEC play.
