A-W’s defensive line prepares for action against Alta-Aurelia Oct. 5.

The Akron-Westfield Westerners traveled to Alta to take on the Alta-Aurelia Warriors in a district one contest.

A-W came out on top 34-18 in a tough game. The Westerners were led by Chance Hoffman who caught 10 passes for 200 yards. Cory Eskra, who was 17 for 24 passing for 269 yards, had the hot hand throwing. He had a couple of dropped balls, one for an early touchdown.

Taylor James had 27 carries for 141 yards. All tough yards as A-A keyed on him and made life a “little testy.”

After a somewhat lackluster first quarter, A-W got on the board late in the second stanza. A-W did have a couple of chances in the first quarter. A-W fell a foot short on one occasion, then an A-W receiver had the ball slip though his hands in the end zone on another chance.

Following an A-A punt, A-W went on a drive of 78 yards in 12 plays, which ended with Eskra scoring on a four yard run to finally get A-W on the board. James passed to Chance Hoffman to add two points, which made it 8-0 at half.

A-W owned the third quarter scoring three times to add 20 points to their total. James scored his first of three touchdowns with a three yard run to make it 14-0. Later, Eskra hit Chance Hoffman with a seven yard pass to make it a little more comfortable at 21-0.

A-A broke into the scoring column as Alex Stephan scored on a one yard run for the Warriors.

James then scored on the two yard run late in the third to put A-W up 28-6.

Garrett Van Houten of A-A ran up the middle for 29 yards to tighten things up at 28-12.

A-W used nine plays to cover 60 yards as James ran in from the four to give A-W a good lead of 34-12. Late in the game, Van Houten scored one more time to close it at 34-18.

A-W totaled 429 yards to A-A’s 216. Rushing yardage was very close as A-W outrushed A-A, 160 to 152.

Defensively, Dan Beitelspacher, Chance Gant, Cole Oltmanns and Cody Bosse had their share of work, but they were well assisted by the rest of the defensive unit. As one astute observer stated, “A-A’s offense wasn’t the best, but they were good, sound tacklers.”

Next Friday A-W returns home to take on the Lawton-Bronson Eagles. Come and enjoy some good, High-school football.
