Hinton sweeps A-W spikers, 3-0

Hinton showed why it is ranked in the top 10 in the state in Class 2A with a 3-0 sweep of the Lady Westerners in War Eagle Conference volleyball action Oct. 9.

The Lady Westerners lost in straight sets: 25-11, 25-8, and 25-18 to the Blackhawks. Hinton improved to 25-4 record overall, 8-1 WEC, with the win and came in ranked ninth in the state.

The Lady Westerners bid farewell to seniors Emily Miller, daughter of Kirk and Felicia Miller and Haley Coyle, daughter of Shane and Heather Coyle, on Parents’ Night, at their final regular season home match. Both players have been playing A-W volleyball since junior high and said the experience with the team has been fun.

A-W had a 10-10 overall record after the loss. The Lady Westerners were 5-4 in the WEC with one match to go.

A-W came out fired up on this special night and gained a 3-1 early lead in Set One. It was tie 5-5 on an ace by A-W senior Emily Miller.

But Hinton then took command of the set with a run for a 13-6 lead. It grew to 20-7 before A-W got a kill by Sarah Schroeder. Miller added another kill and Kayla Tindall had two serving points but that was all A-W could muster.

Miller had two kills early on in Set Two, and A-W had a 7-5 deficit. But it grew to 11-5 Hinton and the Blackhawks led 20-8 as Lauren Hedlund served out the set.

A-W trailed just 6-4 at one point in the Third Set but Hinton then took a 15-10 lead.

Of note, breast cancer awareness efforts continued with the GWC Friendship and Service Club fund raiser for June E. Nylen Cancer Center. Team members continued to wear their pink colored uniforms.
