West Sioux School Board members discussed possible changes to administrative roles for the 2013 – 2014 school year on Oct. 15.

Shared Superintendent Randy Collins said it was important to begin the discussion now whether Interim Principals would be permanently named to their positions. Presently, Ryan Kramer is Principal for Grades 6 – 12, programs, Grades 9 – 12 Athletic Director. Carrie Thonstad is Principal for Grades Kindergarten to Grade Five and curriculum. Laura Hensley is the At Risk Coordinator.

“I think now we’re one-half an administrator short,” said Board Member Jeff Eilts.

“I don’t want us to get too top-heavy,” said School Board President Susan Sharpe. She mentioned three people were doing the jobs last year but in different roles.

Kramer said Hensley is doing a lot of the student discipline now and it was noted she has been assigned grant work.

Further discussion will be held at future board meetings.

In other business:

Approved a Pay Schools program participation. This will facilitate parents’ payment of fees, said Collins and could lead to online registration, said Middle School and High School Principal Kramer.

Contracts were approved, by 4-0 votes, for the following: Grant Van Beek for head high school wrestling; Brad Klarenbeek for middle school boys basketball; Rachel Mutterer and LaVonne Bonnema for Daycare associates; Dani Gradert for business manager.

Noted that Shared Superintendent Collins and Sharpe will be attending the Iowa Association of School Board convention in Des Moines in November.

Middle School-High School addition update

“We have taken control of the Physical Education locker rooms. Two rooms are still under construction, the bio fuels room and the small engines room, but we did not schedule any classes there this semester,” said Grades 6-12 Principal Kramer.

A new West Sioux school sign has been installed on the bus garage.

Approved a 2013 – 2014 Academic Year calendar waiver. A staff calendar committee has met for the first time and discussed in-service training options. Presently this is done with late starts on Wednesday mornings.

Set the next regular school board meeting for 6:00 p.m., Nov. 19.
