John Sand from Urbana, MO, passed away Wed. Oct. 31, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO. Funeral services will be Saturday Nov. 10 at 10:00 a.m. at South St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point SD, Pastor Tim Thies officiating. Burial following in the church cemetery.
John was born May 10, 1952, at the Akron Community Hospital, in Plymouth County IA to Edward and Esther (Miller) Sand of Elk Point, SD. John was baptized and confirmed at South St. Paul Lutheran Church. He attended country school at Pleasant Valley in Union County, SD, and graduated from Akron Community High School in Akron. Following his graduation he started farming with his father. He married Kyle McInnis July 3, 1969, in Akron. They had a son, Thad.
John enjoyed carpentry, music, working on old cars, car racing, golfing, gardening and was an avid sport fan. He loved life and enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
June 18, 1973, he entered the carpenter union. He participated in state competition in 1977. He held a local carpenter union office, and was an instructor for 10 years. He was employed at W.A. Klinger for many years in Sioux City. He also worked for Art and Fred Yates many years.
Survivors include his son Thad (Jill) Sand and granddaughter Joey of Sioux City, a sister Fran (Al) Johnson of Denver, CO, a brother LeRoy (Sharon) Sand of Pittsburg, MO, a sister Jeanette (Jerry) Lias of Akron, nephews Jeff Johnson, Brian Johnson, Leon Sand, David Christensen, and one niece Kathy Brouillette. Several great nephews and nieces, one great niece, cousins, and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal grandparents Betty and Alfred Miller, paternal grandparents Bertha and John Sand, and nephews Kevin Johnson and Tony Sand.
