Janet Martin, award-winning co-author of “Growing Up Lutheran” spoke to a women-dominated audience at Hawarden Community Center on Nov. 8.

Martin, who is from Hastings, Minn., and grew up in North Dakota, presented a humorous talk for about an hour. At the conclusion, she urged all to write down their histories so they would not be lost. Little was spared, from comparisons of religions to growing up and going to town on Saturday night. The audience gave Martin a standing ovation.

“Growing Up Lutheran” inspired the musical comedies “Church Basement Ladies.” Martin has co-authored or authored 17 books. A few brave men did attend the Thursday session. Afterward the attendees could buy books by Martin and enjoy refreshments.

Hawarden Arts Council co-sponsored the event.
