A new girls’ basketball season is about to begin, and Akron-Westfield’s squad has been working hard in preparation, according to Head Coach Kent Johnson.

The Lady Westerners have one senior, Haley Coyle, on the squad of 13 players.

“It’s been going good for the first week. We lost five seniors from last year’s team but the girls have been stepping up and working hard,” said Johnson.

Juniors Dana Hedlund and Jordan Hansen are pegged to play Point Guard.

Sarah Schroeder, Kayla Tindall and Bethany Eastman will play Wing or Low Post. Several sophomores or freshmen hope to provide depth.

Johnson and Assistant Coach Todd Colt are preparing the Lady Westerners for their new season.

The Lady Westerners host West Sioux on Nov. 20 in the junior varsity then varsity clash, starting at 6 p.m.

“West Sioux has always been a good team, especially so the last three or four years but they’ve lost some key seniors,” said Johnson.

West Sioux was a Class A State Semifinalist last season and had a 25-2 record.

A-W has a preseason jamboree at Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn on Nov. 16.
