Chet Utesch has started his collegiate wrestling career at South Dakota State University.

Utesch, a 2012 alum of Akron-Westfield Community School, chose the Jackrabbit’s program.

Utesch is one of three wrestlers on the roster for the Jackrabbits at 125 pounds.

Chris Bono is the new SDSU head wrestling coach.

SDSU opened its season with the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open at the Brookings, S.D. school on Nov. 10. After a bye in the first round, Utesch lost in his only match of the tournament at 125 pounds.

SDSU was at the Northern Illinois University meet in De Kalb, Ill., on Nov. 10.

Utesch’s Westerner highlights

Utesch won three trips to the Class 1A state meet as a Westerner, finishing as high as third place in 2012 at 126 pounds. He ended with a school-record 177 wins, was a four-time War Eagle Conference champion and four-time sectional champion, among many highlights.

Utesch was also an outstanding football player and golfer for the Westerners.

Utesch beat Dylon Roads of Don Bosco Gilbertville, by a close 3-1 margin at 126 pounds at the IHSAA State Wrestling meet in Des Moines in the first round.

Utesch lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals in a 12-5 loss.

Utesch improved his record to 44-3 for the senior season and advanced to the winner’s bracket with a 16-5 win over Ridge Meeker of Logan-Magnolia.
