RSM squeaks by A-W girls

It was another close contest for the Akron-Westfield girls’ basketball team when Remsen St. Mary’s came to the A-W gym on Nov. 27.

RSM’s Lady Hawks (2-0 record) downed the Lady Westerners 45-41. A-W fell to 0-2 record on the year with its second closely contested contest in non-conference play.

A-W led 25-18 at halftime thanks to a 7-1 run. Kayla Tindall made two free throws of four total and Haley Coyle’s basket accounted for four points following a technical foul called on the RSM coach.

Tindall, a junior, finished with 14 points to lead the effort. Tindall had 11 rebounds to lead A-W and had a “double-double” of twin figures for those statistics. She also had three steals.

Junior Dana Hedlund added nine points, six assists and three steals. Senior Haley Coyle had six points.

A-W led 9-6 after eight minutes.

The Hawks had the upper hand for most of the second half, which they won 27-16. They gained a tie at 35-35 after three quarters.

It was 38-38 for about two minutes of play and it looked like another overtime for A-W which has started the season with an extra session a 49-42 loss to West Sioux.

Tindall gave the Lady Westerners a 40-38 lead with 1:40 remaining in the game. She added a free throw with 42.4 seconds left for a 41-40 lead but that would be A-W’s last point of the game. RSM had a 5-0 run to finish the contest as the Lady Westerners committed two turnovers.

Free-throw shooting hurt A-W this game as they were 6-of-16. A-W had 12 steals and 12 assists.

Jordan Hansen led the team with four steals.

Tindall: 14 points, 5-of-8 field goal attempts, 0-of-1 three-point field goal attempts, 4-of-6 free-throw attempts, 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, 1 blocked shot.
