A-W grapplers have solid individuals’ start

Akron-Westfield’s wrestling team had several solid efforts in two duals to open the season against Woodbury Central and Sioux City East in Moville on Nov. 27.

A-W lost both duals, 54-21 to Woodbury Central and 51-23 to Sioux City East.

Achieving 2-0 records on opening night for the Westerners included: senior Daniel Dirks at 138 pounds; senior Taylor James at 182 pounds; and senior Chet Willer at 220 pounds.

One of Willer’s wins was a 12 seconds fall against Kedrick French of Sioux City East.

“For the first meet we did a lot of good things but there are still some things to work on. It was good to get the first competition out of the way and evaluate. If everyone gives 100 percent the team goals will take care of themselves,” said A-W Head Coach Dustin Meinen.

Against Woodbury Central:

A-W’s Mike Sivens lost in a fall at 113 pounds.

Tommy Toben lost 13-0 at 120 to a fourth-place state finisher last year at 120 pounds.

Tyler Waterbury lost in a fall at 132 pounds in :22.

Dirks won 11-0 at 138 pounds.

Cole Oltmanns lost to a returning state qualifier 5-2 at 145 pounds.

Dylan Blinde won by fall in 5:59 at 152 pounds.

Jacob Bergman lost by fall at 160 pounds.

James won by forfeit at 182 pounds.

Trevor Hansen lost by fall at 195 pounds.

Willer won by fall at 220 pounds.

Against Sioux City East:

Tobin lost by fall at 120 pounds.

Waterbury lost by fall at 132 pounds.

Dirks won 11-0 at 138 pounds.

Oltmanns won 2-0 at 145 pounds.

Blinde lost an 11-7 decision at 152 pounds.

Bergman lost by fall at 160 pounds.

James won 4-2 at 182 pounds.

Hansen lost by fall at 195 pounds.

Willer won by fall at 220 pounds in 12 seconds.

A-W had two home wrestling meets this week, against Dakota Valley, Kingsley-Pierson and Beresford, S.D., on Dec. 4 and the Westerner Invitational is at 10:00 a.m., on Dec. 8. A-W is at the War Eagle Conference tournament at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 11 at Hinton.
