Dominic Hirsch brings the ball up court for the Falcons against Spalding Catholic.

Spalding Catholic’s boys’ basketball team defeated West Sioux, 61-50, to start the 2012-2013 season for both teams.

Dominic Hirsch scored 18 points to lead the Falcons and Lee Tapper added 14. Logan Vlotho was next with eight points.

“It was a good effort but we had a lot of mental mistakes. They got a lot of second-chance points because we did not rebound well and they got transition baskets,” said West Sioux new Head Coach Jerome Hoegh, adding junior Hirsch is a good perimeter shooter.

Spalding Catholic led 22-8 in the first quarter; 31-17 at halftime and by 20 points in the third quarter.

“We got a lot of kids some playing time. We just have to do the little things well,” said Hoegh.

On Nov. 30, the Falcons lost to Remsen-St. Mary’s, 53-41. Kembi Kooi had 14 to lead the Falcons (0-2 record). For the Hawks, Matthew Wesselmann scored 25 points and Tyler Delperdang added 15.

Hoegh said the Falcon’s played very hard in the game.
