Dennis David Mortensen of Dakota Dunes, SD, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls. A memorial service will be held Mon Dec. 17, 2:30 p.m., at the First Lutheran Church, 3601 Dakota Ave. S. Sioux City, Neb. The church will be open from 2:00 to 7:00 for visitors. There will be no viewing. Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dennis was born on June 14, 1954, in Audubon, IA. Over the course of his life, he was known by many names including, Denny, Mort, Santa and friend. He was the son of Earl and Mildred (Mendenhall) Mortensen. He grew up in Audubon and graduated from the community High School in 1973. He was also a member of MENSA.

Dennis attended Western Iowa Tech where he received a degree in electronics. Dennis was self-employed and had most recently worked for the AEA Education ICN.

On March 1, 2010, he was united in marriage to his lifelong friend Jeffery B. Fancher in Sioux City. Dennis enjoyed tinkering with all kinds of construction projects including building an airplane. He enjoyed singing and participating in theater, whether it was Community Theater or working in theater productions. What he loved most in life was being with his friends and just being around people.

He is survived by his partner, Jeffery of Dakota Dunes, SD, his brother, Duane and his wife Mardelle of Altoona, IA, his “adopted”sons, Dacota Hewitt of Sioux City and Tavey Sprenger and his family from Sioux City, his sister-in-law, Karen Taylor-Mortensen of Akron, nieces and nephews Mike Mortensen, Shelley Yost and her husband Chad, Marc Mortensen and his wife JoAnne, Jill Villalobos and her husband Leo, Kevin Mortensen and his wife Allie, along with many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Don and a nephew Corrie Mortensen. A memorial has been established in his name.
