UC pulls away from A-W girls

Akron-Westfield’s girls’ basketball team held its own against Unity Christian for the first seven minutes on Dec. 7 battling to an 8-6 deficit on four Dana Hedlund free throws in the first quarter.

Unity Christian then solved the Lady Westerners’ defense, and led by 6-footer Anna Kiel, opened up a 26-12 lead en route to a 59-41 War Eagle Conference victory. Unity Christian (3-1 overall record), was ahead 10-6 after one quarter and 31-17 at halftime.

The visiting Knights put on a three-point shooting display in the third quarter as they made five straight baskets from beyond the arc and led 53-26 after three quarters of play.

Haley Coyle led the Lady Westerners with 15 points. Kayla Tindall added seven, Dana Hedlund had six and Sarah Schroeder five.

Unity Christian made nine three-point baskets and was led by five from Kassidy De Jong, who tallied 15 points.

A-W dropped to an 0-5 overall record, 0-2 in the WEC.

A-W will host Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn at 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 14 in WEC play. A-W is at West Sioux on Dec. 18 and will host Gehlen Catholic on Dec. 21 before Christmas break.

Kayla Tindall: 7 points, 1-of-6 field goal attempts, 1-of-4 three point field goal attempts, 4-of-4 free throw attempts, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals.

Cali Westergard and Kortney Hedlund played, no statistics.

Team 41 points, 10-of-27 field goal attempts, 3-of-10 three-point field goal attempts, 18-of-26 free throw attempts, 24 rebounds, 7 assists, 14 steals, 1 blocked shot.

A-W’s record is 0-5 overall.
