It may be hard to fathom if one just looked at the final score but Akron-Westfield boys’ basketball team opened the game with just a 14-8 deficit to Unity Christian. Chance Hoffman led A-W in the early going.

The game quickly turned into the Trevor Kauk Show as the 6-foot-6-inch Knights’ senior had not one, not two but three slam dunk type baskets on the Westerners in a 68-28 Unity Christian win on Dec. 7. Kauk finished with 18 points and junior Zachary De Jong tallied 16 for the Knights. Unity led 32-10 at halftime and 41-13 after three quarters.

“I thought we came out and played much better tonight with our energy and hustle. We got caught up in the wind and would make some mistakes. But at times we really looked good in the second half. We’ll take the positives from tonight and build from them,” said A-W Coach Jon Harris.

Hoffman led the Westerners with five. Caleb Colt and Kevin Carlson each had four points.

A-W boys dropped to 0-4 overall record with the loss.

The Westerners, who were at Remsen Union on Dec. 11, host Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn on Dec. 14, and are at West Sioux Dec. 18 in a rivalry and winnable contest.

A-W will host Gehlen Catholic Dec. 21 in WEC contests following girls’ games before Christmas break.

The A-W Dance/Drill Team performed its Hip Hop routine and wowed the crowd with their routine that earned a first place trophy in the state’s Class 1 HipHop. The team won a fourth place trophy in Class III Pom.
