Looking to give a gift that will have a long-lasting impact?

Consider giving a donation to the Akron Care Center Project.

The 45-bed nursing home and skilled care facility is progressing nicely.

This will be the last Christmas nursing home residents spend in the current facility located on South Street.

The new facility is slated for completion by June 1, 2013, with an operational deadline of Aug. 13.

City officials and the Project’s Fundraising Committee are still seeking monetary donations. Their goal is to reach the $1.5 million mark.

As of Monday, the fundraising thermometer at the west end of Reed Street shows contributions have reached the $1.3 million mark.

All contributions are tax deductible. To make a donation, contact one of the Fundraising Committee members.

According to Akron Public Works Director Gary Horton, Gil Haugan Construction crews are installing sheetrock and continuing to work on electric and plumbing. They are starting the HVAC (heating-ventilation and air conditioning) systems. Siding will be started in another week or two.

Gil Haugan officials, who are the general contractors, have told Horton they are right on schedule.
