Akron-Westfield’s girls basketball squad made it a two-for-two week in War Eagle Conference play with a 55-22 win over Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn at home on Dec. 14.

Junior Sarah Schroeder led the way with 14 points for the Lady Westerners, now 2-5 record overall, 2-3 in the WEC.

The Lady Westerners made five three-pointers and multiple players contributed to that effort, led by junior Jordan Hansen’s pair as she had 10 points. Jacynda Banks, who scored nine points and Haley Coyle, who scored eight, also had three-point baskets. Kayla Tindall had nine points.

A-W led 30-11 at halftime.

“I’ll take 30 points in a half anytime. We ran our offense much better in seeing the open girl. We’re taking small steps,” said A-W Coach Kent Johnson.

The Lady Westerners had a 51-15 lead in the second half and all players saw some playing time which was nice, the coach said.

MMC (1-5 overall record) was coming off a game which it challenged West Sioux before a five-point loss on Dec. 11 but the Eagles could not get anything going Friday night.

A-W had downed Remsen Union, 36-30 on Dec. 11 for its first win of the season.

A-W concludes pre-Christmas break games by hosting Gehlen Catholic on Dec. 21. The Lady Westerners were at a 6-1 record before West Sioux on Dec. 18.
