On Thursday, Dec. 27, Old Man Winter began dumping snowflakes on the area in what area weather forecasters termed “light snow.” Although they said it wouldn’t start until 9 a.m. that morning, it began more than two hours earlier and by 9:30 a.m., there was approximately 3 inches on the ground and no end in sight. At the Union County Courthouse in Elk Point, Buildings Superintendent/Groundskeeper Scott Sexton was outside shoveling snow all morning long. By Friday morning, Akron had 4 inches of the white stuff, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, S.D.
