Donald D. Allaway, Sr., of Akron formerly of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at the Akron Care Center in Akron.
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2013 at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Reverend Jean Morse of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron will officiate. Inurnment of his ashes will be at a later date in Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation with the family present will be from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Friday at the funeral home and following the service during a time of fellowship at the funeral home. Donald Dean Allaway, Sr. was born August 25, 1929, in South Sioux City, NE, the son of Thomas and Edith (Sunt) Allaway. He attended school in South Sioux City and graduated from high school. Following his schooling, he enlisted in the United States Army. He worked as a clerk in Washington, D.C. Following his discharge, he returned to the area.
He was united in marriage to Avis Boni. They lived in Sioux City and Don worked for the United States Postal Service. Later, they moved to Corpus Christi, TX. While there, Don worked in property management until retiring. Avis passed in 1984 in Corpus Christi. Later, he moved back to Sioux City. In 2005, he moved to Akron and became a resident of the Akron Care Center.
Don was an avid fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers football program. He also enjoyed going to garage sales, playing his harmonica, and building bird houses. He enjoyed country western movies, books, and music. While living at the Akron Care Center, Don enjoyed playing in the Akron Care Center Bell Choir. Don enjoyed being the eldest of four generations of Donald Allaway. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his children: Don (Carol) Allaway, Jr. of Akron, Jeanne Allaway of Jacksonville, FL, and James Allaway of Tampa Bay, FL; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; two sisters: Gladys Hedquist of South Sioux City, NE, and Margie Schaeffer of Denison, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Avis; his daughter: Debbie McCormick-Phillips; a brother: Harold Allaway; and a sister: Ilene Moore.
