West Sioux’s boys basketball team, for the second game in a row, sought an upset with a solid start.

The Falcons led early and forged a 25-25 halftime tie Jan. 8 against Hinton. But the host Blackhawks won the rebounding battle in the second half and cruised to a 70-45 win over West Sioux.

Braedon Petersen led the Falcons with 15 points.

“The first half we controlled the tempo and rebounded so well but we did not do that in the second half,” said Falcons Head Coach Jerome Hoegh.

Jesus Rivera contributed nine points and Justin Negaard had five for the Falcons, 2-9 overall record.

West Sioux gained a 9-8 lead early on a three-pointer by Petersen.

It was a back-and-forth the rest of the first half. A key moment was when the Falcons were going for a tie game but the Blackhawks took a four-point lead. The Falcons did regain the tie by halftime.

Hinton, 5-0 WEC, 6-2 overall record, gained a 20-points lead in the fourth quarter, winning the second half. Senior Jason Vander Kooi led the Blackhawks with 22 points.
