Akron-Westfield girls’ basketball team made the long trip to Westwood in Sloan a worthwhile one as the Lady Westerners won their fourth game of the season, 27-22, on Jan. 12.
A-W led 19-2 at halftime and then held off Westwood, 27-22. Senior Haley Coyle had nine points to lead the way as the Lady Westerners improved their record to 4-9 overall.
“We played some pretty good defense in the first half. Offensively we had 15 points in the first quarter but we stopped making shots in the second and we have to do a better job of taking care of the basketball as we had about 20 turnovers,” said A-W Coach Kent Johnson.
Bethany Eastman led the rebounding effort with 10. Sarah Schroeder added six rebounds to the Lady Westerners’ 24 total. Eastman had two blocked shots and Schroeder had one.
The Lady Westerners scored just eight second half points as the home team tallied 20 and missed 10 straight free throws but held off the Rebels.
Johnson said it was nice to get the road “W” after a 40-34 loss to Spalding Catholic in War Eagle Conference play the night before.
A-W girls hosted Remsen Union on Jan. 15 in WEC play; and will be at Alcester-Hudson on Jan. 17 in non-conference action; is at South O’Brien on Jan. 18 in WEC play. Game times are 6:00 p.m.
