A-W boasts 4 champs at Rock Valley

Four Akron-Westfield wrestlers emerged with undefeated records at the Rock Valley Invitational tournament.

A-W had Tommy Toben go 3-0 record at 120 pounds; Daniel Dirks was 2-0 at 138 pounds; Cole Oltmanns was 3-0 at 145 pounds; and Chet Willer was 3-0 at 195 pounds.

Toben

At 120 pounds, Toben, a freshman, won by pin against Ryan Bolster of Okoboji in 3:05; won by decision against Maxwell Klarenbeek of Rock Valley-Boyden-Hull, 9-5; and beat Efrain Anzua of MOC-Floyd Valley by a 9-2 decision.

“Toben had a good day. He wrestled well and keeps gaining,” said A-W Head Coach Dustin Meinen.

Dirks

At 138 pounds, Dirks won by major decision against Augustin Jimenez of West Sioux, 12-1. Dirks beat Vince Riley of Worthington, Minn., by a pin in 0:39.

“He stormed right through it,” said Meinen.

Oltmanns

At 145 pounds, Oltmanns won by pin over Joe Weaver of Sioux Falls, S.D., Lincoln, in 3:08; won by decision against Zach De Jager of Western Christian-Unity Christian, 7-1, and won by decision against Seth Hoogendoorn of Rock Valley-Boyden-Hull, 6-0.

“Cole came out on a mission to prove what he is about,” said Meinen.

Willer

Willer gained three wins, all by pins. He beat David Doty of MOC-Floyd Valley in 1:01; Jacob Sauter of Okoboji in 3:10 and Ty Koldenhoven of Rock Valley-Boyden Hull 1:51.

“Willer avenged a loss to Koldenhoven at the A-W tournament and beat the No. 6-ranked wrestler in Class 2A,” said Meinen.

A-W had eight wrestlers competing Saturday. Other results were:

Dylan Blinde, at 152 pounds, had a 1-2 record. He beat Joey Mills of Worthington, 8-3; lost to Conner Holmes of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn by pin in 1:36; and lost to Jordan Hanna of Okoboji by a pin in 5:51.

Jacob Bergman at 160 pounds, lost by pin to Zach Kempens of Worthington in 0:44 and lost to Josh VerMulm, Rock Valley-Boyden- Hull in 0:50.

Trevor Hansen of A-W had one match at 220 pounds and lost to Roberto Arazien of MMC, 9-7.

The Westerners finished sixth of nine teams with 107 points, one point behind fifth place Worthington. Team standings were: Rock Valley-Boyden-Hull, 199 points; MMC, 139; Sioux Falls Lincoln, 128; Okoboji, 112; Worthington, 108; Akron-Westfield, 107; MOC-Floyd Valley, 95; Western Christian-Unity Christian, 94; West Sioux, 58.

A-W was at West Sioux with Alcester-Hudson, S.D. on Jan. 15. The Westerners will be at the two-day meet at Battle Creek-Odebolt Arthur-Ida Grove Jan. 18 and 19.

“Ida Grove will have a lot of great wrestlers. It’s a chance to see where we are. The kids will have to be ready every round,” said Meinen.

State rankings for the Westerners by The Predicament showed Taylor James is ninth at 182 pounds; Willer is eighth at 195 pounds and Dirks is 10th at 138 pounds.
