Using an 18-3 third quarter advantage the Akron-Westfield boys’ basketball team earned its second win of the season, beating Alcester-Hudson, 52-43, in non-conference action Jan. 17.

That run was gained in only four minutes of play on A-H’s court.

Senior Chance Hoffman scored 14 points and sophomore Kevin Carlson netted 10 to lead the way for the Westerners, which had a 2-12 overall record after the win. Caleb Colt added seven points, and Nathan Sanchez tallied six. The win marked the second time this season the Westerners have had two double digit scorers. The first time that happened was in the second game of the season.

“We were struggling in the third quarter but all it took was one basket to get us going. Kyle Schroeder came in off the bench and really picked us up in the inside game and in rebounds,” said A-W Coach Jon Harris. “The game was an opportunity for both teams to come in and get a “w.” It came down to who had the most desire. In a game of runs, we had a slight cushion to work with.”

The Cubs, who feature hot-shooting eighth and ninth-graders, gained a 23-23 tie on two Lyle La Framboise free throws with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Hoffman started the A-W run with a basket, and Colt then got a steal and a lay-up hoop for a 27-23 lead. Carlson scored on a fast break basket for a 30-23 Westerners’ lead.

Schroeder put back a shot for a hoop and an eight-point A-W lead after a Cubs’ free throw.

Carlson scored on a fast-break hoop, was fouled and made both free throws, and Jacob Neubrand scored for a five-points trip down the court that boosted the A-W lead to double figures. Joel Brenner and Schroeder scored hoops for A-W for a 4-2 run to close the quarter with A-W enjoying its biggest lead of the season, 41-26, after three quarters.

Alcester-Hudson scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter by Mitchell Johnson and La Framboise, but Hoffman had the answer hoop for a 13-point lead. The home team had chances to trim the lead under 10 points but Hoffman scored again for a 45-35 cushion.

A-W was eight-for-12 free throw shooting down the stretch to secure the win. Tavian Banks made four of the free throws.

A-W led 13-8 after one quarter as Colt, Hoffman and Sanchez contributed points. A-W led 23-17 at halftime.

Logan McConnell, an eighth grader, had 15 points to lead the Cubs.

A-W lost to South O’Brien 77-30 in WEC play Jan. 18 in Paullina.
