Akron-Westfield wrestlers finished in the middle-of-the-team standings with a 12th place effort of 24 teams at the Odebolt-Arthur-Battle Creek-Ida Grove (OABCIG) tournament in Ida Grove held over two days, Jan. 18 and 19.

A-W finished with 97.5 team points.

The Westerners are next at Kingsley-Pierson’s tournament Jan. 26, the final tournament before the Woodbury Central of Moville Class 1A sectional Feb. 2.

“Given the number of kids we had there, 12th is pretty good,” said A-W Coach Dustin Meinen of OABCIG’s meet, which was in its 43rd year.

The Westerners achieved a runner-up finish from Chet Willer at 195 pounds; Taylor James was fourth at 182 pounds; Daniel Dirks was fourth at 138 pounds; Cole Oltmanns was fourth at 145 pounds; and Tommy Toben got a sixth place finish at 120 pounds to lead the A-W efforts.

Willer came the closest to claiming a championship with a 3-1 tournament record.

“Chet beat a ranked kid, Matthew Streit of Prairie Valley in the semifinals,” said Meinen.

Willer started the tournament with a win by pin against Nolan Machovec of South Central Calhoun in 0:30. Willer then won by pin over Darin Peterson of Woodbine in 3:57.
