Morningside College took a giant step toward a third consecutive Great Plains Atheltic Conference (GPAC) wrestling championship when the seventh-ranked Mustangs came from behind to edge No. 13 Midland Jan. 23 in a dual meet at Morningside.
The Mustangs climbed to a 2-0 record in the GPAC dual meet standings and raised their overall record to 7-4. Mornigside’s two league victories were against 17th-ranked Dakota Wesleyan and Midland.
Morningside’s seniors from Akron, John Sievert and Chad Morehead, had a win and a loss in the meet. Sievert, at 197 pounds, beat Kolton Kersten, 2-0, in a hotly contested battle. Sievert improved to a 5-2 record with the win. Kersten had been ranked second. Morehead, ranked 12th at 165 pounds, lost to Sterling Terry, 5-2.
Midland took an early 7-0 lead against the Mustangs after it opened the dual with a major decision as Tyler McMichael beat the Mustangs’ Jordan Langley, 8-0 and Terry beat Morehead.
Rulin Pederson put the Mustangs on the scoreboard with a 6-1 decision against Conor Hovey at 174 pounds to narrow the gap to 7-3. The Mustangs did not take their first lead until the ninth bout of the night when eighth-ranked Garret Lambrecht pinned Jared Wilmert in 3:37 in the 141 pounds match for an 18-13 Morningside lead with one match remaining.
Cody Green of Midland beat Kevin Olson, 3-1, for the final score, at the 149 pound battle.
The home team’s strength showed in the lower weights as Morningside won at 125 as Kory Kistner beat Aspen Kmiec 8-2; at 133 pounds, Nathan Ryan beat Jacob Luning-Hoshino, 2-0 and Lambrecht’s pin at 141 pounds.
Fans also had a chance to see Sievert and Morehead compete for the Mustangs as they battled at Northwestern College against the Red Raiders and Buena Vista University Jan. 29 in dual meets.
Morehead came into the Wednesday dual at the Hindman-Hobbs Center as the Mustang with the most wins at 16-7 record with two falls.
The win against Midland followed a 22-21 win against the Warriors for the Mustangs in 2012. Midland is 4-3 overall record in dual meets.
