West Sioux boys’ basketball team battled Remsen-St. Mary’s down to the final minute, training 55-53 with 41 seconds to go in the War Eagle Conference contest Jan. 25.
But the Falcons could not gain another point and lost, 57-53 to the Hawks.
Kembe Kooi led the Falcons with 14 points and Kezden Blankenship added 12. Braedon Petersen pitched in with eight points.
Matthew Wesselman and Tyler Delperdang led the Hawks with 15 and 18 points, respectively.
“Kembe is such an intense kid. He plays hard all the time,” said West Sioux Coach Jerome Hoegh.
The Falcons led 11-2 at the outset with the final points of the run coming on a Justin Negaard fast-break lay-up.
The Hawks had closed the gap to 11-9, though, after one quarter. Lee Tapper’s hoop gave the home team a four-point lead, 24-20, but the Hawks were able to gain a 38-33 lead midway through the third quarter.
The Hawks’ lead grew to nine points, 50-4, in the fourth quarter before West Sioux rallied. A put-back basket by Petersen cut the lead to four points, 55-51, with 1:26 left. Petersen made two free throws with 41 seconds left but the Hawks got a field goal and a free throw to secure the win.
The Falcons had a 3-15 overall record. They lost to South O’Brien 67-26, Jan. 22.
