A-W grapplers focused for sectional meet

Akron-Westfield wrestlers are in sharp focus for the Feb. 2 Woodbury Central in Moville Class 1A sectional meet when spots at the West Monona district will be at stake.

“We have to have everything right the next two Saturdays. There is very little margin for error. I think we’re moving in the right direction,” said A-W Head Coach Dustin Meinen.

The sectional meet in Moville begins at noon. The Feb. 9 meet for the first and second-place advancers will also start at noon.

A-W had two champions at the Kingsley-Pierson meet Jan. 26 as Tommy Toben won at 120 pounds and Daniel Dirks won at 138 pounds. Toben has a 33-8 record heading into the sectional, and Dirks has a 32-7 record. Dirks pinned all three opponents at the Kingsley-Pierson tournament.

Taylor James has a 29-4 record at 182 pounds and finished second at Kingsley-Pierson.

Chet Willer has a 34-4 record at 195 pounds, is ranked seventh in the state and was second at Kingsley-Pierson.

Cole Oltmanns has a 32-12 record at 145 pounds and was runner-up at Kingsley-Pierson.

Dylan Blinde has a 27-14 record at 152 pounds and was third at Kingsley-Pierson.

Jacob Bergman at 160 pounds and Chance Gant at 170 pounds took third places for the Westerners at Kingsley-Pierson.

“Overall we had a good day. We made a run for the team title and everyone we brought placed,” said Meinen of the Kingsley-Pierson tournament.

A-W finished in a tie for third in the team standings with 166 points with Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/ Remsen Union. Pocahontas Area won the tournament with 185 points and Hinton was next with 169.

A-W had an 9-11 team record to finish the dual meet portion.

Individual results at

K-P tournament:

Toben had a 3-0 tournament record at 120 pounds. He won by pin against Dylan Richards of Ridge View in 1:30; won by pin against Blake Walton of Hinton in 0:42 and won by 14-4 major decision against Alex Montes of West Sioux.

Dirks had a 3-0 tournament record at 138 pounds. He won by pin against Sergio Carbajal of Ridge View in 3:47; won by pin against Mark Peters of MMC in 3:03; won by pin against Isaac Reis of Kingsley-Pierson in 5:08.

Cole Oltmanns, 2-1 tournament record, finished second at 145 pounds. He won by pin against Lucas Turner of Kingsley-Pierson in 0:59; won by pin against Tony Baker of Westwood in 3:48; lost by pin to Dakota Drenth of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in 4:48.

James had a 1-1 tournament record at 182 pounds and finished second. He beat Werner Trieweiler of Hinton by a pin in 0:33 and lost to Justin Theisen of MMC by a 3-2 decision.

Willer had a 2-1 tournament record and placed second at 195 pounds. He won by pin against Jordan Gengler of Hinton in 0:45; won by pin against Chris Weiler of Kingsley-Pierson in 0:17; lost to Jeremy Watson of Pocahontas Area by pin in 1:15.

Dylan Blinde, 3-1 tournament record, finished in third place at 152 pounds: won by pin against Quinton Robinson of Hinton, 1:33; lost to Conner Holmes of MMC by pin 4:21; won by pin against Michael Nasers of Kingsley-Pierson in 5:20; won by pin against Robinson (second time facing him) in 5:42.

Bergman had a 3-1 tournament record and finished in third place at 160 pounds. He lost by pin to Dru Kenny of Ridge View in 1:40; won by pin against Lance Gulbronson of Hinton in 0:15; won by pin against Derek Seward of Westwood 0:32; won by pin against Colin Poss of Hinton in 0:33.

Gant had a 3-1 tournament record for third place at 170 pounds. He beat Dillon Kunneke of Ridge View by pin in 0:52; lost to David Olson of Pocahontas Area by pin in 1:05; won by pin against Alec Wodtke of Hinton in 0:48 and won by pin against Kunneke.

Michael Siebens had a 1-4 tournament record at 113 pounds. He lost by pun to Cole Mills of Hinton in 0:52; won by decision against Zach Kenny of Ridge View 8-2; lost by pin to Joseph Rivera of HMS in two rounds; lost to Ben McDaniel of MMC-RU by pin in 3:10.
