West Sioux wrestlers Jose Montes and Alex Montes earned spots at the Okoboji-Milford District Meet Feb. 9 by winning the 113- and 120-pound weight classes at the Central Lyon Sectional meet held in Rock Rapids on Feb. 2.
“If they wrestled like they did on Saturday, they both have a very good chance to go to state,” said West Sioux Coach Grant Van Beek, adding both will have tough first-round battles.
Junior Jose Montes beat Ben McDaniel of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in the first round at 113 pounds by a 16-1 technical fall. He then pinned Kyle Vierck of West Lyon in 5:26. Jose Montes has a record of 20-7 heading to the district meet.
Sophomore Alex Montes will take a 15-11 record to district competition as he beat Austin Robinson of MMC in a pin in 2:42 and beat Ryan Bolster of Okoboji in a pin in 3:53.
The top two individuals from each weight class go on to the state meet, which starts Feb. 14 in Des Moines.
The Falcons had several fifth-place finishes at the sectional meet.
Junior Misael Topete at 126 pounds lost his first round match to Kyle Green of Sibley-Ocheyedan (result unavailable) and then faced Matthew Peck of MMC and won 10-3 decision for fifth place. He finishes with a record of 22-13.
Antonio Pleitez of the Falcons, at 138 pounds, lost his first round match to Dakotah Goodwin of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn by a 12-5 decision. Pleitez, a sophomore, beat Chris Kollis of West Lyon, by a 5-3 decision. He beat Bodie Osborn by pin in 3:2 for fifth place. Pleitez finished with a 14-28 record.
Johnny Duenas of the Falcons, at 132 pounds, lost his first round match to Derek Erdman of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn by a 15-0 technical fall. He beat Hunter Huisman of Central Lyon by a 14-4 major decision for fifth place. Duenas had a 16-28 record.
Eddie Armenta, 152 pounds, of West Sioux, lost his first round match to Tyler O’Connor of Sibley-Ocheyedan, in a pin in 4:50. He lost his fifth place match by a 7-3 decision to Skylar Towne of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.
Josue Arreola, a sophomore at 145 pounds, lost his first round match to Taeric Ezzell of West Lyon, in a pin in 1:21. He lost his fifth place match to Zach Fugitt of Central Lyon, in a pin in 1:03. Arreola had a 3-9 record.
The Falcons finished the meet with 80.5 total team points for last.
Final team standings were Central Lyon, 182; Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, 180.5; Sibley-Ocheyedan, 163.5; Okoboji, 156; West Lyon, 140; Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, 1-8.5; and West Sioux 80.5.
