Morningside College was picked for a second-place finish in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Baseball Coaches’ Pre-Season Poll.
The Mustangs received three of the 11 first place votes and 90 points to finish six points behind defending league champion Doane College in the pre-season poll.
Morningside posted a 37-21 record and finished second in the GPAC standings with a 13-7 league mark during the 2012 season, its first under new head coach Brian Drent. The Mustangs achieved their fourth 30-win season in the last five years.
The 2013 Mustangs’ roster includes junior pitcher Derek Appley, of Akron, an Akron-Westfield alum.
The Mustangs will open the 2013 season with a doubleheader against Judson College on Feb. 8 in the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.
In other baseball news, Drent has announced the names of three transfers who enrolled at Morningside over the semester break and will compete for the Mustangs in the upcoming 2013 season.
The transfers are Ross Ackerman from NCAA Division II Northern State University; Brian De Jong from Garden City Community College; and Chris Eckstaine from Iowa Western Community College.
