Morningside College scored all of its runs in the second inning when the Mustangs defeated 25th-ranked Judson University 3-2 in the opener of a twinbill Feb. 9 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

The Eagles rebounded to win the nightcap 8-3 and take three of the four games in the weekend series.

Judson pitcher Ryan Perez pitched a three-hitter in the opener but two of the Mustangs’ hits came in their three-run second inning. Jordan Mouw led off the inning with a single. Josh Gross worked Perez for a walk to put runners at first and second. One out later, Cole Halgerson double to drive in Mouw and send Gross to third base, where he scored on a passed ball. Halgerson, who went to third on the passed ball, eventually scored when Kyle Gogel bounced into a fielder’s choice.

The Mustangs’ only other hit was a first inning single by Mike Anderson.

Perez retired 13 of the Mustangs’ final 14 batters of the game and finished with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Morningside pitchers Matt Russell, Bobby Lee, Derek Appley of Akron, and John Sorenson combined on a six-hitter with five walks and two strikeouts. Lee, who pitched the fourth and fifth innings, was the winning pitcher and Sorenson worked the final 1.2 innings for a save.

The Mustangs also did all of their scoring in one inning in the nightcap with a three-run fourth inning to close within 5-3 against Judsoin. Travis Hanson led off the inning with a walk to set up a RBI triple by Britt Anderson. A.J. Staiert singled to drive in Anderson and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Nick Fure relieved Judson starter K.C. Wright with no outs in the fourth inning and pitched two innings of scoreless relief to get the win.

Morningside pitchers Derek Frahm, Chris Eckstaine and Brett DeJong combined to give up eight hits and eight walks. They struck out seven.

Aide from their two hits in the fourth inning, the Mustangs’ only other hit was a sixth inning double by Staiert.

Morningside will return to the Metrodome for a 10:00 a.m. doubleheader Feb. 13 against Viterbo University.
