Jose Montes of West Sioux won the second qualifying spot in the 113-pound weight class at the Okoboji District Tournament on Feb. 9.

Montes, a junior, will compete at the state Class 1A individual meet at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines starting on Feb. 14. It concludes Feb. 16.

Montes, 21-9 record, lost to Mitch Brinkman of Pocahontas Area, in a close 10-9 decision the first round. Montes beat Alex Hoffman of Graettinger-Terril/ Ruthven-Ayshire, 2-0, in the second place match.

“Jose got a reversal in the last second of the second period and rode him out for the third period,” said West Sioux Coach Grant Van Beek.

Jose had a 9-7 lead late in the third period against Brinkman but after Brinkman scored an escape, he got Jose on a last-second takedown. Brinkman went on to win the weight class title.

“Jose will be pretty focused for state. It will be good for him to have the loss and show him that you have to keep going after an opponent,” said Van Beek.
